Based on Bianca Stigter’s book Atlas of an Occupied City, Amsterdam 1940–1945, Occupied City (2023, Rated PG-13) follows daily life under Nazi occupation and reveals the contrast between past atrocities and the bustling modern city. As stories of ordinary lives conclude in suicide or murder, Occupied City explores the realities faced by Amsterdam’s 140,000 Jews, highlighting the irony of the country’s wartime distinction for both resistance and persecution.
