Lauren Oyler with Harper’s Christopher Beha on “Fake Accounts”

Mar 23, 2021 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Suddenly left with no reason to stay in New York and increasingly alienated from her friends and colleagues, our unnamed narrator flees to Berlin, embarking on her own cycles of manipulation in the deceptive spaces of her daily life, from dating apps to expat meetups, open-plan offices to bureaucratic waiting rooms. She begins to think she can’t trust anyone–shouldn’t the feeling be mutual?

Lauren Oyler’s essays on books and culture have appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, the New York Times Book Review, the London Review of Books, Harper’s, the Guardian, New York Magazine’s The Cut, Bookforum, the Baffler, the New Republic, and elsewhere. This is her first novel.
Christopher Beha is the editor of Harper’s Magazine. His most recent novel, The Index of Self-Destructive Acts, was nominated for the 2020 National Book Award.
