So you’re not creative enough to come up with your own whirlwind, sweep ‘em off their feet Valentine’s Day plans. That’s totally fine. No one needs to know. Now go forth and romance in the wonderful city of Hartford.
You love your significant other, but you also love food:
There are lots of noteworthy restaurants in Hartford so why not take advantage of them? ON20 is offering a six course tasting menu with optional wine pairings, Carbone’s Ristorante is offering select specials alongside their regular menu, and Max Downtown is serving a three course prix-fixe menu with choices like rack of lamb and togarashi spiced Hawaiian tuna, just to name a few.
You love sports almost as much as your significant other:
On February 10, UCONN Women’s Basketball takes on Wichita State at the XL Center. (Fun fact: Wichita State sports teams are known as the Shockers. We don’t know what it means but we like it.) On February 15, it’s the UCONN Men’s turn with a game against Tulsa. On February 16, UCONN Men’s Hockey takes on Boston University. On February 17 you have two chances to watch the Harlem Globetrotters dribble all the balls and take on their arch nemesis, the Washington Generals. Lastly, the UCONN Women are back on February 18 for a match-up against Temple.
You can’t celebrate on a weeknight:
Maybe your boss is making you work late, or you can’t find a sitter, or maybe you just have no desire to be out on the same night of the week as everyone else who is celebrating. Well, on February 10th you can join the ladies at Tainted for a fun and flirty night of beginners Burlesque at their new event space. Or you can listen to The Hartford Symphony perform the Keys to Romance at The Bushnell featuring the Anderson and Roe piano duo on February 16-18th.
You think traditional Valentine’s Day ideas are for newlyweds and Hallmark Channel employees:
O.k., so the whole ‘candlelight dinner-flowers-chocolate’ combo makes you break out in hives. We understand. For those looking for possibly the most unique dates ever: The Connecticut Historical Society is hosting an exhibit of all their historical oddities called That’s Weird. Trinity College Chapel will host the CONCORA ensemble performing two ancient mass texts. Everyone’s favorite movie, The Princess Bride, is showing at Cinestudio. The Wadsworth is showing a special watercolor film about Vincent Van Gogh. WNPR’s Chion Wolf hosts her hilarious live advice show, Asking For A Friend, at Sea Tea Comedy Theater. Infinity Hall is hosting a Journey tribute band, just in case you don’t stop believing.
A romantic dinner isn’t enough:
Name something better than a night of dinner and dancing surrounded by world class pieces of art. If you attend the Wadsworth Atheneum Valentine’s Soirée you’ll enjoy passed hors d’oeuvres, a three course dinner and a selection of desserts catered by the Mill Restaurant Group, along with an open bar, photo booth and music.
You’re really trying to go the whole nine yards:
Why have the evening come to an end when an adorable boutique hotel is calling your name? Spend a night at the newly renovated Goodwin Hotel and experience downtown living for a night. Staycations are a brilliant way to get away from it all without having to sit in a car for hours or deal with the TSA. Plus if you happen to work downtown, then hey, your commute is that much easier in the morning.
You want to be entertained:
When a night on the town is in the cards, Hartford has lots to offer. If live music is your jam (get it?), Boo-Yah is performing at Free Funk Wednesday at Arch Street Tavern, Black Eyed Sally’s is hosting a Community Blues Jam, Constellations, a play about love, friendship and free will is at Theatreworks, and Casablanca, the 1942 love story with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is playing at Cinestudio. If you are an early bird who wants to catch a musical worm, the Wadsworth is also hosting a Jazz Brunch on Sunday, February 11.
Your perfect evening involves peace and quiet:
If your life involves shrieking children, or seasonal depression because Punxsutawney Phil just predicted six more weeks of winter, then this is for you. The Mindful Meditation class is open to students of all levels of meditation practice (first timers included). Meditation has been linked to you get a better night sleep, producing clarity, and lessening anxiety, all things that sound great for helping a relationship along.
You totally forgot and don’t want to sleep on the couch:
It’s not really something you do together, but frantically running to the florist before they close totally constitutes an activity. House of Flora and Devars-Phillips both sell beautiful bouquets of all price ranges and sizes, and if you need something a little sweeter, Edible Arrangements on Pratt Street has you covered.
