Folxtales: Three Family-Friendly Chamber Operas with ASL Translation
Owl Moon (Ellen Gilson Voth/Jane Yolen)
Owl Moon is based on the award-winning book by Jane Yolen of the same name. A young girl remembers searching for owls in the woods with her father on a cold winter’s night. This chamber opera for soprano and baritone was premiered by Hartford Opera Theater at the 6th annual New in November festival. Performances will be accompanied by a new arrangement of this opera scored for flute, harp, and clarinet.
The Green Child (Ashi Day)
The Green Child by Ashi Day is based on the fairytale The Green She-Devil by Marcel Schwob and the English legend of the green children of Woolpit. A mysterious green girl that speaks another language is discovered living in a dark forest. Could it be that embracing someone different than you could change you both for the better? This 15-minute miniature play is scored for soprano and clarinet.
Starsong (Elliot Yokum/Sarah Florence Barker)
Starsong is a modern fairy-tale about queer loneliness and the importance of found family. Starsong is chamber opera about a young girl who falls in love with a star and must choose whether or not to remain with her family or follow her heart. This opera is scored for three sopranos, accompanied by flute and harp.
