Rosa Parks and the civil rights movement recognized how important public transportation was to equity and social justice. Rosa Parks was born on Feb 4th in 1913, and this Sustainable Commuter Meetup will be in her honor. On December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to recognize segregated bus seating, and the rest is history.
Public transit connects us in the metro Hartford region, and we must continue to organize and strive for sustainable, equitable, and convenient public transportation. Too often our streets, cities, and town centers are designed for single occupancy motor vehicles, and funding for public transportation and transit oriented development come second to more parking garages and highway expansions.
