Broad Street Farmer’s Market

Jul 09, 2020 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

The Farmers Market is a place where corporate employees venture into the neighborhood, where seniors and SNAP recipients stretch their food dollars, and where communities co-mingle. The Market is situated on the green, adjacent to Firebox Restaurant on Broad Street. It is open June through October, on Thursdays from 11AM until 2PM.

Hartford is Connecticut’s capital city and home to several Fortune 500 companies, and yet 35% of the city’s 125,000 residents live below the poverty line and approximately 40% of residents receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits (formerly food stamps). Hartford is also ranked the worst of Connecticut’s 169 towns in population at risk of food insecurity.

As one means for increasing access to healthy, locally-grown food, four of Hartford’s farmers markets accept SNAP, including Forge City Works, Homestead, the North End, and the West End markets. In addition, all four markets participate in the Double Value Coupon Program (DVCP), a national non-profit program that provides customers with an incentive to spend their SNAP dollars at farmers markets by doubling the value of SNAP they spend on produce.
